WILLIAM GUTHRIE, presumptive son of James Guthrie and Bussell, (p. 216) is the fourth and last of this group. He was born about 1735 and adventuresome, sturdy and young he pushed into the western wilderness."' "Pittsburgh in 1761:A return of houses, men, women, and children at Fort Pitt, April 14, 1761: Upper Town, house No. 43, William Guttery,l man, I woman, no children." In a letter the date of which is not, known, Isaac Craig of Pittsburgh wrote2' "No. 43, Guttery, appears to have been an Indian trader, and is merely mentioned in Croghan's Journal of 1765." What the question was in reply to which Craig made this statement is not known. Croghan came into severe criticism for licensing Indian traders on his own authority.

So far as the records show this William was the first Guthrie to live in Pittsburgh. In The Wilderness Trail is found this"William Guttery (or Guthrie) is recorded as being in Pittsburgh in 1760." At this time a thriving trade was carried on at that point and numbers of frontiersmen were bending their way thitherward. But with the beginning of Pontiac's War in 1762, the population of Fort Pitt was reduced to that of a small garrison. Ten years after the above census was taken the place was but a mean little village and as such it remained for many years.

The supposition is that William Guthrie and wife left Fort Pitt at the beginning of Pontiac's War and found refuge in the Westmoreland settlement and it is assumed that he is identical with William Guthrie, of Washington Township, Westmoreland County, Pa., whose record follows. It is a matter of regret that these assumptions have to be made, but in the absence of the facts no other course is open. All available records have been examined, all persons of the name have been considered and there is little to fear that this assumption can be successfully disputed.

302 BOOK Il

William Guthrie enlisted about April, 1776, as a private in the Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment commanded by Col. Samuel Miles, in Capt. Joseph Erwin's Company.' He served the term of enlistment one year and nine months.

Col. Miles reported that nearly the whole of the Rifle Regiment was raised in about six weeks.'"' It rendezvoused at Marcus Hook about May 15, 1776. On June 2nd the Regiment was ordered to Philadelphia, on the 5th marched for Trenton, whence it marched to Amboy under orders to join Gen. Mercer, which it accomplished on the 16th. At Amboy the riflemen refused to serve under Gen. Roberdeau, not having elected his legion. On the 10th of August the Regiment crossed to New York and on the 12th was brigaded with Glover's and Sherwood's regiments under command of Brig.Gen. Lord Sterling.

Col. Miles wrote in his journal ""On the landing of the British Army on Long Island, I was ordered over with my rifle regiment to watch their motions. I marched near to the village of Flatbush, where the Highlanders then lay, but they moved the next day to Gen. Howe's camp and their place was supplied with the Hessians

I lay within cannon shot of the Hessians for four days without receiving a single order from Gen. Sullivan If Gen. Sullivan had taken the requisite precaution and had given his orders agreeably to the attention of the CommanderinChief, there would have been few if any prisoners taken on the 27th of August."

' Col. Brodhead stated that at daybreak August 27th, Col. Miles ordered him to follow him toward the Jamaica road but he was hindered in so doing by Willis, commander of the New England troops, who favored guarding a road which connected the Flatbush and Jamaica roads. Miles tried to reach the Jamaica road in advance of the British, but was thrown into confusion by the New Englanders breaking through his files. This gave an advantage to the British, which they were not slow to grasp. The Battalion of which Capt. Erwin's Company was a part lost about one hundred, chiefly prisoners. One of these was William Guthrie."'

He was held a prisoner for eighteen weeks and released, (probably exchanged) about Jan. 1, 1777. Whether or not he took a furlough home at this time is not known. He next joined March 1, 1777, Capt. James Carnahan's Company of Col. Walter Stewart's Regiment.' He was in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown and was discharged at Valley Forge, Jan. 1, 1778, by reason of expiration of term of enlistment.

William Guthrie returned to his home from Valley Forge and later served in Capt. Jack's Company of Col. Brodhead's Regiment. He probably joined in March, 1778, when Brodhead was on his march to Fort Pitt, whence in July, 1778, he made a detour upon the West Branch to check the savages in the Wyoming and West Branch valleys.'

WILLIAM OF JAMES, SR. 303

He served two months in the Cumberland County Militia under command of Col. Culbertson.

it is impossible in every case to determine to which, of the three William Guthries, of Westmoreland County, Pa., who were in the Revolution, records refer. Where there is uncertainty, the reference is not given. It will be noted in the following that this William is said to have served four years in the 7th Pennsylvania Regiment Continental line, which time is understood not to include his service in Col. Miles' Rifle Regiment. It is beyond doubt, therefore, that were the uncertainty removed, a number of the many references to the military services of men of this name would be found to mean our present, sturdy and heroic patriot.

An extract from the Westmoreland Democrat, dated 1829.

"William Guthrie of Washington Township died Aug. 8, 1829, in the 95th year of his age. He was one of the pioneers. Mr. Guthrie enlisted in May, 1777, and continued in the service for four years in the 7th Pennsylvania Regiment Continental Line. He participated in many engagements with the Indians on the Westmoreland frontier and was noted for his great bravery."

He was a pensioner of the Revolutionary War.'

It will be noticed that the forgoing quotation gives his age at death as in the ninetyfifth year, the statement made by friends in connection with his pension application gives his age as 73 or 74 at that time. (See Appendix No. 270.) The application was made in 1819, ten years before his death, when he would have been eightyfour. The same difference appears in the following:

I "Pennsylvania Pensioners, Westmoreland County, William Guthrie, private, Pennsylvania Line. Took out pension June 9, 1819, aged 84, died Aug. 1, 1829."

" "NonCommissioned officers and privates of the Seventh Pennsylvania Regiment, Continental LinePrivates. Guthrie, William, May 27, 17771781. Died Aug. 1, 1829, in Westmoreland County, aged 84." Due consideration leads to the acceptance of the age of 94 years at death.'

William Guthrie lived in the settlement around Fort Wallace, in Washington Township, Westmoreland County.

James Guthrie, supposed to have been a son of William Guthrie, (see P. 383) "came from Westmoreland in 1805 and settled in Armstrong County, in Cowanshonack Township." Prior to coming to Armstrong, he was a member of the Polk Run Presbyterian Church in Westmoreland and seems to have retained his connection with if for some time after changing his place of residence." He was a sturdy pioneer, an upright man and a substantial citizen of the frontier community in which he lived. His homestead was near the present town of Atwood, Pa. He married about 1813, "Sally" Cochran; died May, 1863.
