652--John Guthrie immigrated into the colonies. (Note there is supposed to be documentation of this including the name of the ship. I haven’t seen it yet)
24 February 1652--The ship the John and Sarah arrived in Boston with Scottish prisoners from the battle of Worcester. This ship is said to have left the Downes on 8 December 1651 and to have arrived in Boston on 24 February 1652. Robert Guthrie was amoung those on the ship. After his indenture he showed up a Block Island and apparently became a solid citizen there. He is shown elsewhere as overseer of the poor. Source, Scotch Prisoners Deported to New England by Cromwell 1651-52 by Charles Edward Banks. (My note: I have included this because of the date. But this was a Robert not a John, and Robert stayed in New York)
20 December 1658--The deposicon of John Guthrey aged 22 years or thereabouts. Saith that in Ao. 1656 this depont did set up Caske for Mr. Tho. Bushron and came to his house about 2 or 3 dayes after yt Richard Barkshyre his overseer was gone to Mrs. Colborne’s wedding at Pyanketanke, there I heard him complayne of Richard Barkshyre for leaving his cropp in ye chiefest time of his cropp being att topping time, and further saith ye sd Mr. Tho. Bushrod did often blame Richard Barkshyre very much for his neglesting to build a tobaccoe house yt hee was to build for him and yt his cropp did suffer very much for want of ye house. signed John Guthrie. Jr. in Cur. 20 Dec 1658. York Co. VA

January 1658--John Guthrie served on a jury in York County.
The area that is now Middlesex County was first part of York County. Lancaster County was formed from York County. Sometime before 1660 the parish was divided into two portions, seperated by the Rappanhannock River, and the new parishes were named Lancaster and Pyanketank. In 1666, they were reunited under the name of Lancaster, but a few years later they were again seperated and became what we now know as Christ Church, Lancaster, and Christ Church, Middlesex.
The first building at Chrish Church, Middlesex was erected about 1666, the present one in 1712. About 1840 the church was restored. The Colonial Governor, Sir Henry Chicheley is buried there. Information taken from historical marker in the vicinity. Location Christ Church, N-48, Rte. 33, 2.4 miles s. of Urbanna.
The historical marker for the Lower Methodist Church reads as follows. Built in 1717, this was the second lower chapel of the Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County. It occupied the site of the first lower chapel of this parish. Built before 1691 as the church of Piankatank Parish. Bartholdmew Yates was the first minister of the present church. After 1792 the church was unused. Except by the Methodists or Baptists. In 1857 Robert Healy bought the church from the Parish and gave it to the Methodists who have worshipped here ever since. Location Lower Methodist Church, N-50, Rte. 33, 9.3 miles s.e. of Saluda
1661-Piankatank Parish Church was built. It is now the lower Methodist Church. There is a sign on N-50 in Middlesex Co., VA.
1661--An Eliz. Guthrie was buried at the old Casper River cemetery in 1731 at 70 years old. She would have been born in 1661. (Note: I have failed to record the place of the cemetery)
21 December 1661--From the York Co., Virginia Records 1659-1662. Court for December 21, 1661. Certificate granted to Mary Ludlow as adm’x of Thomas Ludlow, dec’d for 2050 acres of land for importation of 41 persons…John Guthrey. Whether this is the same John Guthrie as found above and below is problematical. It is my understanding that sometimes the land records were recorded several years after the fact.

28 April 1691--John Guthry was granted 200 acres of land "on the south side of King’s Creek near Porotank. This entry appears in the records of Gloucester County, but the land was evidently in that part of Gloucester that became King and Queen County in 1691, for the records of the Public Record Office of Great Britain contain the following entry under King and Queen Co. No. of acres new and old, 277. No. of acres old, 200, To whom granted, John Guthrie 16 June 1714. Importation rights 2. The grants mentioned in these two quotations are for the same land, since they both speak of "Formerly granted unto Humphrey Dennis by patent dated the 6th of July, 1654" (My note: this is the land referenced by Henry P. 84 acres another part thereof granted by patent unto sd Edward Simpson dated 16 April 1667 and:

1702--Edward Guthry was the owner of the land whereon the ferry called Gutteries, which crossed the Mattapony and Pamunkey from the upper side of the Mattapony River to Brickhouse below the Pamunkey River. This ferry was established by an Act of the General Assembly in 1702. Hening Vol. 3, page 219. (My note: this places the land of Edward Guthrie on the boundary of New Kent County and King and Queen County and on the York or Matamony river.)
1702--Jane King, who lived at Brickhouse, petitioned the General Assembly, which petition was referred to the Council, complaining that Daniell Guthry and John Bailee of King and Queen County stopped her ferry boat from landing passengers on the north side of the York River. On the same date the following appears in the deed books of Middlesex County:

17 July 1747 I don’t have the complete source. Survey Report No. 4232. On July 1747, the ship Laura or Lowry had set sail for Maryland and Virginia with a complement of convicts from Newgate Prison, and in fact, anchored in the eastern branch of the Potomac River on 25 October following. However the ship being rather short of masts and yards, William Gracie, master of the Laura, decided to send (John) Guthrie ashore to a Mr. Smith there to fashion new ones. Guthrie, unfortunately, neglected his work, and Gracie was forced to hire additional carpenters to complete the job. The ship lay at achor until 25 May 1748, when it returned to London, but Guthrie had left it to visit Boyd’s Hole in Virginia. On 28 August, the Laura arrived in the Port of London with its cargo of tobacco, plus the tools which Guthrie had left behind (valued at twenty shillings only). Guthrie’s negligence cost Gracie eighty pounds in additional expenditure.
ff.401ro401vo ½ 27 September 1749. Examination and evidence, as above, of Angus Macdonald of the Parish of St. Dunstan’s Stepney, mariner, age 40. MacDonald was the Laura’s second mate and boatswain, but, like Guthrie, did not return to London. He maintained the ship had a crew of twenty-onehands, and on the outward voyage, carried 133 convicts, and no other form of cargo.

This cannot be the same person who received a pew in the new Stratton-Major Parish Church, since he would have only been twelve. This probably also means this James is not the father of Henry P. Guthrie. It may mean that this James is the son of the James that received 60 acres of land from John (who died in 1761 page 6, Wayne T. Guthrie)

One of these 60 acres tracts was in the possession of a John Guthrie who died in 1761 and whose will was probated on October 17, 1761. This will mentions three sons, James, Richard and John, Jr. John jr. was bequeathd on a shilling and James and Richard were to received the land. John Guthrie, Sr. also had a brother, William, to whom John Sr. was heir-at-law. James the oldest son of John Sr. was to have his choice of John’s land or William’s land, and the other portion to go to Richard. Source: Call, Daniel. Cases in the Court of Appeals of VA. Quoted in the William and Mary Coll. Quar., Series 2, Vol. 11, p 113. (My note: if the John born in 1761 is indeed the son of the above, then it is obvious why he only received a shilling. He was less than a year old!)
1761--A John Guthrie (who served in Nathaniel Welch’s Company see entry in 1777) born. This is the presumned John Pollard Guthrie, uncle of Henry P. Guthrie. However there is a major inconsistancy here: John, Jr. and his wife were granted a pew in the new church in Stratton-Major Parish in King and Queen County on December 11, 1767. He would have only been 6 years old! More than likely this John is the son of James Guthrie who was granted the pew, and received the 60 acres from his father John who died in 1761(Wayne T. Guthrie).

12 July 1787 Jesse Guthrie (son of William and Eleanor) witnessed the will of Thomas Edmundson in Halifax County NC. He signed by mark. However when he witnessed a Power of Attorney between John Moore and Reuben Guthrie in 1784 it is not noted that he signed by mark. This may have been a common practice, one way and then the other. In the Kentucky 1800 Tax List Jesse Guthrie is listed as being in Lexington, Fayette County. In both the 1810 and 1820 Census he is a resident of Harrison County, as he was in 1816 when he gave Benjamin Batterton a Power of Attorney for the administration of the estate of his brother, Reuben. In the 1810 census index he is shown as having 6 children and one woman in his household. None of his descendants have been located. In 1822 he was involved in a deed for a piece of property in Harrison Co. and his wife's name was given as Priscilla.

Prior to 1800-- Settlement White People.-It is difficult at this remote period to fix upon the exact year in which white men first came into what now constitutes Trigg County. But from the most authentic of the scant sources of information it appears to have been as early as 1778. "The first of these were hardy adventurers from the Carolinas, who floated down the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers on flatboats, and after erecting a few temporary huts contiguous to the banks of the streams, remained but a few years and then suddenly disappeared, leaving no traces behind them except the rude habitations that could not be dignified with the appellation of cabins. What their object was speculation can hardly furnish a conjecture. There are no evidences of their having been hunters or trappers, and the fact of their showing no disposition to plant even so much as a patch of corn, was a conclusive proof that if they had a motive at all, it was not an agricultural one." The next comers, according to Collins, were Dr. Thomas Walker and Daniel Smith, the Virginia Commissioners appointed to establish the boundary line between the western portions of Virginia and North Carolina (now Kentucky and Tennessee), and their surveying party. "On the 23d of March, 1780, having run the line entirely across the county westward, and across Tennessee River, they closed their survey according to directions from Richmond. They made a tolerably good map of Cumberland River, the first that was ever made. One of them went down the river with the baggage while the other proceeded through the woods with the survey. Their report speaks of the Cumberland as a 'fine stream, navigable at least 700 miles above its mouth.'" Following close after these came several families of permanent settlers, but few of whom have left any traces behind them. The site of one of the first oldest settlements in the county is in the neighborhood of Cerulean Springs, but the names of the majority of the first-corners have long since faded from the memory of the oldest inhabitants. As early as 1782 or 1783, Robert Goodwin, of North Carolina, and his sons Samuel and Jesse, were living near where Robert Goodwin, Jr., now resides, a short distance from the village of Cerulean Springs. They were, like the majority of the early pioneer8, fond of their gun, and were good hunters, but when the season was over for the pursuit of game, they displayed a laudable ambition for some more permanent industrial business enterprise. They cleared up fields, planted and cultivated them, and aside from looking after their farming interests, paid considerable attention to the raising of domestic animals. They had considerable herds of cattle in a very early day, and seemed much more fortunate with them in the neighborhood of the springs than in any other localities. After the Goodwins came the Spencers, James Daniel and sons Elijah and George, John Blakely, William Johnson, Joel Thompson, John Goode, Eli Hasber, Jacob Stinebaugh, John Guthrie, David Haggerd, Samuel Campbell, Wiley Wilson, Seth Pool, Joel Wilson, William Wilson and Adam Thompson, all of whom became citizens, and had homes in the northern part of the county as early as 1800. Between the Rivers.-About the same time of the second influx of permanent residents, quite a settlement had sprung up between the rivers

February 6, 1883, Forty-Fifth Volume, No. 25 On the evening of January 26, James Guthrie, a wealthy planter of Halifax, Va., was married to Miss Hulda Martin, the daughter of a prominent citizen of that county. The wedding was attended by the people in the community and everything passed off merrily. The young married people failing to make their appearance at breakfast next morning, inquiry was made concerning them. The bride of a few hours soon appeared, wringing her hands in wild despair. She stated that her husband was dead, and that she found him a corpse upon waking in the morning. It seems that sometime during the night the bridegroom had died of an affection of the heart.
